SNEAK PEEK! ARCHIVES / The Vault: ARCHITECTURE

Photo: Darling / Greene and Greene House

The Mary Darling House, completed in 1903, was designed by noted architects Charles and Henry Greene. The simplicity and clean lines of the design distinguish it from decorative Victorian and Revival styles and foreshadows many of the Craftsman elements Greene and Greene used at the well-known Gamble House in Pasadena. Greene and Greene incorporated Craftsman elements in the interior design of the Darling House, including pocket doors that lend to a continuous flow of space, clean lines, and numerous built-in elements that  contribute to the continuity of the residence’s aesthetic.

Like the Low House, the Darling Residence has a broad and massive slopping gable roof that gives the structures a sense of monumentality. The triangular mass of the residence seems to hug the land, an aesthetic that is atypical of Craftsman style. The commission of the residence was a significant turning point in the design aesthetic of Greene and Greene. The Darling Residence was recently sensitively restored by the architectural firm Hartman Baldwin. Additionally, Claremont Heritage showcased in the Darling Residence as part of our 2018 Home Tour. Original drawings for the Darling Residence are part of the Greene & Greene Architectural Records and Paper Collections in the Avery Architectural and Fine Art Library at Columbia University....Show Less
