Tree Crisis in Claremont, CA - City of Trees

We are in a Tree Crisis!

In the fourth year of a historic drought, Californians are being required to cut water usage. Many communities including Claremont, a Tree City USA, are losing mature trees that shade our homes and yards, clean and cool the air and contribute to our physical and emotional well-being. When homeowners and cities remove turf and change to low-water landscapes, the trees do not receive the water they depend on for survival. Many homeowners are not aware that in most California cities, the homeowner is responsible to water the City Trees in front of their home or business. We are losing trees that can take 40 or more years to grow back. Besides losing the natural beauty, there are significant other negative implications of losing mature trees. Our property values will go down, we will contribute to global warming and health risks will increase. Please use the following guidelines to ensure that our Urban Forest will continue to thrive.

For small and newly planted trees water once a week for 15 - 20 minutes - if you have a sprinkler system replace your spray head with a bubbler for a good soaking. Or get out with the hose and enjoy the nature. When using a hose with a spray head you do not have to water only on the days specified for spray irrigation watering systems - you can do it when it works best for you!

For large, mature trees, consider installing a drip system that will soak the root system - once or twice a month for 45 minutes to an hour. The goal is to soak the ground to a depth of 18 - 24". You can also attach a "soaker hose" to your garden hose and wrap it around the base of the tree out to the drip-line (the edge of the tree canopy) and make sure your trees get the moisture they need.
